This part is both the start relay and the overload. The start relay boosts the compressor, and then shuts off as soon as the motor gets up to speed and the overload provides extra protection against excessive temperatures.

Our Refrigerator and freezer stopped working
I had read on a fix it site that the start device for the compressor on this particular model was known to fail after 3-5 years. When we received the part it looked like something that just plugged into the compressor. My husband unscrewed the panel in the back of the fridge and saw the part on the compressor. He first removed the three wires that it was connected to, and the wires were inside a plug so all he had to do was remove the plug from the start device. He then removed the old start device from the compressor. Plugged in the wire plug into the new start device, and pushed in the new start device into the compressor. There was also another black part plugged into the old start device that he plugged inot the new start device that connected to the compressor. Our freezer and refrigerator starting working. Within a couple of hours our freezer had made ice. Read more...

My Whirlpool Fridge and freezer would not get cold.
My Whirlpool model (GB2FHDXWS09) Fridge and freezer would not get cold. The compressor would turn on for about 5 seconds and turn off. I called parts Direct and they knew it was the Capacitor right away. I also ordered the Start Relay just to replace it as well, that was my choice.

Received the parts super fast. I chose to pay for faster shipping.

Super great place to shop, watch help videos and get the answers you need for what you need. Super happy with everything about this company and the person that helped me on the phone to place the order and confirm I was ordering the right part.

Done and working. Took me about 5 minutes. Everything is plug and play besides taking a few screws off the back.

Thanks Team !

Bryce

Refrigerator and Freezer would not cool
I took off the plastic cover plate that covers the overload and relay on the condensor. There are Three pins; two connecting to the relay and one to the overload. I removed the wires from the overload and relay and used a screwdriver to pry them from the pins on the condensor. I reinstalled the overload and relay and she works like new. When you shake the bad relay it sounds like there is broken glass in it. Read more...

loss of cold air and subsequent meltdown of contents
Shut of both freezer and refer section, as well as unplug unit. Remove h2o line to bottom of frig that supplies ice maker. Remove back panel and set aside. Remove green, red and white wires from relay and start device. Be sure to mark which goes where, it may seem simple, but 3-5 days later when the parts arrive, things may look different. Install the two replacement parts in the reverse order by which you removed them. Remember, white tabs are down and touch back of lower part when installed. Install panel and hto line, check for leaks, plug in and turn refer on. Read more...

Overload was open
New part was similar, except contact blade was for a full 1/4", my model utilizes 1/8". So I cut the blade in half with a hacksaw, filed off the rough edges and reassemblied the connector; attached it to the compressor
Now being a retired electronic engineer; who's great idea was it to hide a klixon inside the connector?
