Maytag Washer Dryer Combo Front Glide Kit
2. Removed 4 screws from inside the dryer, to take off the blower housing.
3. Removed 4 screws and took out the large metal piece which supports the drum at the front. Removed the drum.
4. Replaced the two rollers that support the drum in the rear. Cleaned the pins they run on, and oiled very lightly. Also replaced the idler roller. I was surpirsed to see that these rollers use plain bearings, not ball bearings.
5. On the front support piece, drilled out the rivets for the glides, and replaced the worn out glides with new parts. Applied a little glue (3M weatherstrip adhesive) to the cork pieces, to glue them to the metal. Attached the plastic pieces over the cork pieces, and riveted in place using rivets that came with the glide kits.
6. Replaced front and rear felt seals. This was not as tricky as I expected it to be. They were held in by metal tabs. Glued the ends where they came together.
7. Replaced the felt blower seal. Glued to the blower housing.
8. Reinstalled the drum, installed new belt, which came with good instructions (luckily).
9. Reassembled front support piece and the front of the cabinet.
I also cleaned the lint from the cabinet and from the vent hose.
In general, the job went without a hitch, and the machine probably has quite a few years left, despite the fact that it's 18 years old. This gives me a good feeling.
I'd say this would be challenging, though, for someone who is not pretty experienced with machinery repair. Also, the cost of the parts was significant enough that it would not have been unreasonable to have opted for a new machine. Read more...

The front glide is located at the front of the dryer, the drum rides along it. If you hear a metal-on-metal noise when your dryer is running, your front glide may be worn out and require replacing. This front glide kit comes with a blue plastic glide, a brown cork pad, and two metallic rivets. Two kits are required per appliance. While you have the front bulkhead removed for this repair, you may want to inspect the felt that lines it. If the felt is damaged, it is recommended that you replace it at the same time. You will need a rivet tool for this installation, as well as a stubby Phillips screwdriver, a 5/16 nut driver, and a drill with a 1/8-inch bit.

Washing machine shakes violently during spin cycle
Removed four screws that hold the top control panel to the base and hung over the back panel in order to remove the main wrap-around body of the machine. Took off top plastic ring fastened to side of tub then removed old Balance ring. Installed new balance ring. Unfortunately, this did NOT fix the problem. This was a suggestion from Justanswer.com and failed miserably. Does anybody know how to fix this problem? And it's not the springs or the little plastic shims around the base OR the cross coupling to the motor...

Maytag Washer Dryer Combo Outer Tub With Bearing
The washer's sound during spin cycle had changed over time from a jet-engine whine to a low rumble. Inspection from the rear revealed that the seals between the spinner and outer tub had failed, and the bearings had been damaged by water intrusion. The bearings are not a replacement item. They are installed as part of the outer tub assembly, so the whole outer tub must be replaced. This requires almost complete disassembly of the washing machine.
The disassembly was relatively easy with the maintenance manual in hand. I had to use a gear puller to remove the pulley, though. I decided to replace not only the outer tub, but the spinner shaft as well since I believed the shaft may have been damaged when the bearings failed.
Reassembly was not so easy. I installed the outer tub, then wrestled with the heavy counterweights. The lower weight was particularly unwieldy, since I had support it from below while attaching it to the bottom of the tub. I finally used books of different thicknesses to hold the weight in place while locating the screw holes for attachment. The upper weight attached easily after I wrestled it into position. This is a concrete weight of about 25 lbs, I would guess.
The other problem was attaching the outer tub cover with the rubber boot attached. It is held by 12 clips, and it was difficult to seat the cover tight enough to attach the clips. I started at the bottom and worked around, instaling clips as I went. The last 4 clips were the hardest; I had to cinch up the cover with C-clamps before installing the clips.
The rest of the assembly was not difficult.
I had my wife help locate the new tub on the struts in the back and to help support the motor while I hung it on the outer tub. Otherwise, this is a one-man repair.
Total cost around $350, thanks to Partselect.com reasonable prices. I shopped around and they offered the best price snd excellent service.
I spent about 8 hours on this job. Read more...
