Whirlpool gas stove burner igniter had broken.
Our existing gas stove burner igniter had broken on one of the four burners. I therefore obtained a replacement igniter and mounting screw form PartSelect.com which were indeed perfect replacement parts. However, I could not remove the burner plates from the top of the stove since they were basically welded into position by years of heat.

Read more I therefore followed instructions as submitted by a previous customer (thank you Michael of Bloomington, Il), snapped open the stove lid retainer clips, and then lifted the stove surface about 4 inches. Through that opening I was able to reach the underside of the involved burner. Unfortunately, I could not unscrew the existing broken igniter mounting screw and therefore had to break off the already broken igniter and grind down the remaining mounting screw using a drill grinder since the screw was basically welded into place. Once I did that, I was then able to install the new igniter using a separate unused screw hole already in place right beside the old previous mounting screw. With that done, the new igniter works perfectly and the burner works just like new. It was however a lengthy process over two hours long because of the glitches described above. Nevertheless I'm very pleased that the parts were perfect and the repair is complete.

Flip it over and try to unscrew the screw holding the igniter. When you fail, drill it out and get a small metal screw to replace it. The metal is soft and the screw is hard, so drill carefully. The rest is easy, put in the new igniter and screw. and put it back together.

I must admit that I did not do this. A neighbor who has electical experience did the job.
The screws that hold the ignitors were too corroded to reuse. It required drilling new holes and taping threads. If self-taping screws were included it would be easier to replace.

The tubes have angles and curves to "accept" the bending pressure I was applying, so it looked like I was doing the right thing. In case I was not doing the right thing, however, I raised the top only enough to get access to the ignitor base and mounting screw. Then the fun began as the screw would not loosen. After several attempts using liquid wrench, tapping on it, etc., the screw head finally just broke off. Uh-ohhhh. Not to worry, however, as there was an empty mounting hole right next to the old one that appeared to be able to work. The mounting screw for the new ignitor was backordered, so I tried a couple dozen different screws I had in my toolkit and finally found one that would fit width-wise, but I had to nip off some of the length to get it to seat properly. The replacement ignitor also had a different width blade connector than the original so I had to grind away some of its width to reattach it to the lead wire. If I had a different sized blade receiver, I would have instead replaced the receiver on the end of the lead wire. It took about 90 minutes in all.

(1) When I turn the left front power burner control knob to 'ignite" position the igniter for the right rear "accusimmer burner sparks instead. (2) my wife says it seems to take to long for anything to heat up; even on the power burner. Suggestions?

Unfortunately, this part WP8523793 is not listed as a compatible part on your appliance. The surface igniter replacement for your model comes with the burner head assembly. Depending on which surface igniter you needed to replace, you would want to order per your model information, and those parts are as follows: Top Burner with Spark Electrode PartSelect Number: PS389259, Top Burner with Spark Electrode - 12K - Right Rear PartSelect Number: PS389260 and Top Burner with Spark Electrode - 6K - Right Front/Left Rear PartSelect Number: PS389258. I have ordered part # ps11746068 spark igniter for this cooktop. I don't have a repair manual for this cooktop and the parts schematic shown on your site don't indicate what the process should be to replace this item. Are the burner heads attached to the top or are they screwed into the burner body. Do i just have to remove the burner head (attached by two screws) to replace the igniter?

I recently asked a question about installing part #ps1174606 surface burner spark igniter in a Maytag counter top ( mgc5430bdw) and followed the instructions received, they apparently don't apply to this model top. The burner head is held in place with two screws and while i can wiggle the burner head against the slack of the screws, i can not move the head any further either cw or ccw by hand or with a strap wrench as instructed. Aside from drilling the heads off the screws ( the screw drive is rusted/burned) is there another solution.

When one burner is turned on and ignights the spark ignighter on the other burners will continue to flash for several seconds (20-30) before eventually turning off.

Hi Mike,
Thank you for your question. A normally functioning igniter will typically click up to three times before it sparks. But, every now and then you may run into instances where the ignitor continues to click or tick even after the burner is lit, or the burner never lights at all. A clicking ignitor typically is not dangerous and may continue to click if the gas is shut off.
One of the most common sources of this issue is that the Burner Cap is out of place. Make sure the cooktop is completely cooled and remove the Burner Grate to access the cap. Try removing the cap and center it on the base. If the burner cap is askew, it can prevent the burner from lighting.
If that doesn’t work, check for moisture. If you recently had a pot boil over on burner, a food or grease spill, or cleaned the cooktop, there may still be moisture present even if it looks dry. Remove the burner cap and give the burner time to air dry. To speed up the process, make sure all the burners are off and towel off the top of the range. You can then either use a fan aimed at the range top or set your oven to 350° and leave it on for around 30 minutes to speed up dry time.
If you see that there is debris stuck in the holes in the burner, that could also potentially be the culprit.
You can use a metal pin or paper clip to clear the debris out of the grooves. Never use items such as toothpicks to do this, they may break off and get lodged inside.
If you get through all of these tips and still have the clicking problem, it may be the Spark Module, Spark Ignition Switch or the Ignitor itself. You can find replacements for your model stove for purchase on our website. If you feel comfortable, this is a repair you can do yourself. But, if you’re ever unsure don’t hesitate to contact a technician and consult your owner’s manual. I hope this helps. Thank you and have a great day!

Thank you for your question. If your range has a bottom drawer where you store pots and pans, pull the drawer out and you will find the label with the model and serial numbers either on the left or right frame that the drawer shuts onto. You may also find it either behind the control panel if it is a gas oven, behind the fuse cover, underneath the cooktop (if it is a lift-up style), under the front surface unit, on the frame of the broiler section, on the door frame, on the exterior of the unit or the interior side panel. Where is the igniter harness for the top burners igniters located and how do i gain access to it i have checked the sketches the do not help me

Hello William, thank you for your question. The spark igniter harness mounts on the burner valve stems. When the gas burner valve knob is depressed and turned, this part creates a spark that lights the gas and starts the burner. To access these parts follow these steps to lift the maintop and replace the parts. 1. Disconnect power before servicing. 2. Remove surface burner control knobs by grasping knob and raising knob straight upward. 3. Remove screws securing infinite switch bracket to maintop. 4. Remove screws securing burner assemblies to maintop. 5. Remove screws securing maintop to chassis. Screws are located in the front left and right corners with the upper oven door open. 6. Remove screws securing ground strap to chassis. 7. Raise and remove maintop from unit. 8. Locate switch and replace 9. Reverse procedures to reassemble. I hope this helps!
