PartSelect Number PS1964350
Manufacturer Part Number W10156812
Introducing the Interlock Spring from the trusted and reputable Whirlpool brand. This genuine OEM part is designed to work seamlessly with select models of Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Jenn-Air, Amana, Inglis, and Magic Chef microwaves. The function of this part is critical, as it effectively resets the cam plate for the interlock switch each time you open the microwave door. However, due to the potential of high-voltage capacitors in your microwave retaining a dangerous electrical charge, even when unplugged, it is recommended to have this part installed by a qualified service technician. Kindly ensure to confirm that this interlock spring is the precise part appropriate for your appliance model before ordering. Door switch inconsistent operation for Open/Close sensing.
Ordered top & bottom micro-switches and mounting plate parts. Internet reviews could not find specifics if the issue was due to a top/bottom or combination of micro-switch or mounting plate failure. Pulled the plug. Removed the top vent assembly cover held in by 2 Phillips screws inside the vent. Removed the control panel held in by 1 Phillip screw at the top vent assembly area. Lifted control panel upward to release the catch and moved it off to the side - didn't disconnect any leads. Used a Torx bit to remove the door switch mounting plates at the front and pulled the plates through the opening from the control panel. Documented the wire color code connections, the top plate uses 2 micro's with one using both the closed & open contact. Installed the respective micros on the mounting plates and worked backwards with the wiring and removal steps. Once completed, the open/close sensing has worked every time. Read more...

Broken spring in microwave door
All screws easily accessible except for one on bottom of door. It was tough to remove, even tougher to reinstall. Took some time and a unique combination of patience and small tools.

My biggest problem was getting parts. I ordered what was shown in the exploded view - a spring. I received one spring. When I took the door apart I found 2 springs both different (a left and a right). Only one was broken and the spring I received just happened to be the wrong one. It took a phone to work things out and get the other spring shipped.

It would be good if the exploded view showed both springs. It would be better if the part number would just include both springs. Come on, handling, packaging and shipping costs more than these simple springs. If one spring breaks there's a chance the other is about to go. Shipping the pair to customers so we can replace both just makes sense to me.

both upper oven door springs broke. Door would not stay closed except with "self-cleaning latch in place"
I HAVE NOT FOUND ANY GOOD DESCRIPTION OF HOW TO REPLACE DOOR SPRINGS ON A BUILT-IN DOUBEL OVEN ANYWHERE ON THE INTERNET. I HOPE THIS WILL BE OF HELP TO SOMEONE.

I correctly assumed it was the springs that broke. With the springs in hand I shut off the power at the breaker box. I removed both oven doors. The upper oven door required the removal of one screw for each hinge. Then with the door slightly open, wiggle and pull upward and the door detached from the hinge. The lower oven door is removed by just wiggling and lifting with the door slightly open. I then removed 8 screws that fasten the oven to the cabinet. I removed 3 screws that hold the bottom vent cover in place and wiggling and pulling downward the vent cover detached. The bottom of the oven was 11 inches above the floor. I placed two sturdy objects about 10 inches tall in front of the oven and lifting, wiggling, and pulling the oven moved forward. I pulled it out about 2/3 of its depth.

The sheetmetal sides of the oven are indented and the spring attachments are easily accessible. ONE TROUBLE SPOT. The back end of the spring attaches to the cabinet but there is a small metal piece called an "anchor" that attaches to the front of the spring and then to the hinge. When the spring breaks the anchor goes flying. I was able to retrieve one of the anchors but the other one fell down between the insulation and the side of the cabinet and I was not able to retrieve it with out pulling the side loose. I was afraid I would run into other issues if I did that. So my oven is sitting in the kitchen while I wait 3 days for a replacement anchor.

The anchor is about $7 and the 2-3 day shipping is $10 so you might do well to just order one along with the spring.

I ordered a pair of lower door springs at the same time. About $10 each. Worth it to me not to repeat this process in the near future.

Once the oven is pulled out, the springs are very easy to install. I did all three I could do in about 10 minutes max.

MY BIGGEST PROBLEM was deciding how to get at the springs. All diagrams in the installation manual showed solid metal sides on the oven. They did not show that the springs we easily accessible outside the oven case. I was pleasantly surprised to see the indentations as I started to slide the oven out of the cabinet!

With the springs installed, I will just push the oven back into the cabinet, install the 8 screws, replace the lower vent cover and install the doors. Turn on the breaker and receive the applause of my wife for my marvelous ability!

one of the torsion springs was broken in the door- right one
This one is painted model and the door has 2 screws at the bottom and 2 at the top to take out to get the front of the door off. First remove the vent assembly at the bottom of the door by removing the 4 screws.Hold the door together(I finally used a big piece of masking tape to hold the door top together to get it back together). Take the bottom screws out first and then holding the door front from underneath open the door to get at the top 2 inside screw. and pull it away carefully from the inner door parts and lay it aside on a carpet of towel. Then the fun begins-takingout 2 screws holding the plastic inner door cover to get at the torsion springs at the bottom of the door. these screw ar near each end of the plastic part but the left one is directly above a vent sticking out fromthe back of the oven below. There is only about #/4- i inch space to get a screw driver onto the phillips head screw. I have alot of small screw driers butnot even aphillips head fro a drill driver is short enough to get into the space. I used apreviously bent small screwdiriver to get the screw out. I tried to bend another screwdrover to a shorter dostance but it snapped off in the bending process. I fanally got it out and replaced the broken spring. Tbouth a set of sprnings that were supposed to be the same for left and right sides so I decided to replace oth springs while I had it apart. The right side spring went in fairly easily after figuring out how th thread it into the holes. The unbroken spring wass not so easy. I finally idcovered that the new spring ws not bent the same as the original one and was not going to go in the place of the old one. I ended up putting the old one back in and putting the dooor together with a little difficulty. I replaced the bottom screw on the door with longer ones as well as the upper ones and got a much better job done. Read more...
